Distribution of Airflow and Media Moisture Content across Two Vertical Bed Biofilters

For its small square footage, a vertical bed biofilter was developed for odor emission mitigation livestock facilities with limited area available installation. However, concern about the design is that airflow and moisture may be poorly distributed across due to effects of gravity. Relevant data are sporadic in literature. To fill knowledge gap, two biofilters were constructed at university swine facility monitored months. The monitoring taken 27 grid points on each per field visit. Results revealed both medium content unevenly distributed. sun-facing side had significantly lower (p < 0.01) solar-induced water evaporation. directly facing barn exhaust highest airflow. Airflows varied along height biofilters, but no significant difference noted. uniformity content, characterized by coefficient variance (CV) distribution (DU) respectively, examined over campaign. Possible reasons uneven explored recommendations made address issue. findings from study expected further development implementation biofiltration technology control.
